My system is not overclocked.  Underclocking the graphics card a bit did not resolve the issue.

My processor has this huge fan addon to it to ensure cooling. I dusted my whole comp out around the beginning of December, but I'll check the video cards when I dust them out sometime this week.

Since you have such an insane rig, consider using compressed air to blow out the graphics cards.

Compressed air comes out quite cool, so makes sure your computer has been off for awhile and is room temperature to avoid thermal shock.

If dust is an issue, most good quality cases have dust filters behind the intake case fans, and they work well.

I have a question Lamer, but this thread is tl;dr so..

are you on server at all? i dont think i've seen you. If not.. get back on and visit ya hoochie.

Oh and I have a pc question i wanted to verify. My video card is an ati with hypermemory, it says 1.9 gig of hypermemory. What is this and why do i have it? does it make it a better video card for it or does it just drag it down and use up my physical memory

I am not a regular visitor to the Chapel, just because the 90-minute long sessions of building treehouses and staircases to the moon don't interest me as much as the map-centered experiences of the SillyZone.  I also kind of feel that GMod does a better job of offering that experience than the Chapel does.  I don't mean offense, because it's all really cool, that's just my take on it.  I did go on there a few months ago and got to fly around in a special custom vehicle that worked like a hovercraft and had weapons.  WEEE!

I like to tinker, but instead of doing that on the Chapel I program Jukebox for Source, set up websites for people and do other technically-oriented favors.

When it comes to games, I play mostly with a group of guys called "TEAM CHEESUS".  We play in lots of free leagues even though we always lose because we mostly play for fun and don't develop strategies.  I ran my own TF2 server for awhile, which I took down this past weekend as everyone has moved on. I still rent a Ventrilo server for us and we're on there every night.  We play a lot of League of Legends and Left 4 Dead 2, and lately I have been playing Modern Warfare 2.  If you're interested, the Ventrilo address is vent.teamcheesus.com, on port 14050.

As for HyperMemory, it's just ATI's branding for their cards that use system memory for part of the video buffer instead of having on-board memory.  More specifically, I'm pretty sure that HyperMemory involves having a small amount of memory right on the card but mostly relying on system memory, to strike a balance between cost and latency.  The upper limit refers to how much system memory the card is able to address to the video card.  Remember that more HyperMemory means less system memory available to the PC.  1.9 GB would be a stupid amount, because presumably the card is not a top-end performer and it will never be able to make use of that amount of memory unless the frame rate is 5fps.  No matter what, though, having adequate on-board video memory will perform better than using a HyperMemory card, as graphics card memory is a lot faster and is just physically closer to the GPU.

nVidia's equivalent technology is called TurboCache, which frankly is a better and more clearly representative name.

Well, dusting with compressed air didn't do much. There wasn't much dust to begin with. All I get is slightly better framerates; everything else still occurs.

On another side note, the program I use to read temperatures (CPUID HWMonitor) isn't detecting my video cards (but everything else). It used to, months back.

You should check those GPU temperatures because you have a very agressive build.

SpeedFan is also really good at finding temperature readings.

I tried both programs, and they either didn't detect it or simply said 0 degrees celcius. I wouldn't be sure to say it's heating, he fact that the freezing only occurs at the beginning of my gaming periods. When it does it once or twice, it never does it again the whole time I'm playing. It's just annoying to get yourself into a game and have it freeze for 10-15 seconds just minutes in.

ok that makes sense.

could be a hardware fault.  Try underclocking the cards.

If underclocking doesn't work you might want to RMA those video cards. Hopefully you have a warranty.

Use Rivatuner to underclock it. 196.21 driver has a *clocking problem so if you find that you can't underclock your cards, rollback your drivers.

By the way, you might be able to expose a hardware problem by excessively underclocking, but you shouldn't accept that.  If you only have to underclock 5% then you might be willing to accept that.

I've been encountering problems with Steam in Windows 7 (x64).

On system start up (from shutdown), Steam (which starts on start up) takes a few minutes to appear on the desktop (in system tray/taskbar/windows). It is running though, because you can see it in the task manager, slowly increasing memory usage.

On system start up (from sleep/hibernate), Steam (which starts on start up) often crashes. Some things that happen are: the Games menu freezes and Steam crashes, games take 5-10+ minutes to start up (if they do, sometimes they just freeze and Steam crashes).

After Steam crashes and I end-task-it from task manager, it takes 10-20mins to start up again. It may or may not work properly.

Back in 32bit XP this didn't happen, and sometimes Steam starts up and functions just fine in Windows 7 x64. It's really aggravating. I'm on the University's internet if that may make any difference.

I'm running Win7 Professional 64-bit , with 4gb of RAM.  I have Photoshop CS3 running in WinXP Compatability mode and it causes my video driver to crash and then recover.  This only happens in Photoshop.  The settings state that GPU enhancements are "not available" and are disabled.  I can't seem to find a fix for it.

I run Windows 7 x64 and  have no trouble with Steam.  I know that Steam includes design features explicitly for use in Windows 7, which is very much officially supported.

Okay so heres my problem, xbox live doesn't work for me and I have tried every possible method. Itgets to my router on the network config, but cancels out at "internet" it tells me theres a problem with my DNS but I'v no idea how to fix it. I have tried to forward my ports, but i'm not sure if either it didn't work, or I just didn't do it right. Any idea whats wrong with it?

Tons of things could be going on.  The DNS error happens when the Xbox can't communicate with the internet.  Some basic steps:

1. reboot your modem/router.  Make sure when you plug them in, you plug the modem in first, wait for all the lights to come back up, then plug in the router.
2. Make sure you don't have mac-cloning turned on on the router.
3. Make sure you haven't inputted static IP or DNS servers into your Xbox.
4. If you bypass the router and connect your xbox directly to your modem(after rebooting the modem of course) and you are able to connect, the problem is with your router- refer to vendor.

I'v actually already connected it to the modem before, and then it worked. I had the sitting room like a machine, with wires everywhere....was like inside the TARDIS. But anyway whats a vendor? is that my ISP? cause I'm gunna see if my brother can give them a ring to find the problem.

If you bypassed the router and you're able to connect... then the problem is with the router.  "Vendor" is the manufacturer of the router, IE Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc.

Your ISP will probably laugh and tell you the problem is with your router and say the same thing.

Just bumping this topic to say that both of my problems went away simply by updating the BIOs on my motherboard.

Yesterday (before the BIOs update), after playing two hours without SLI, there were no freezes. Immediately after enabling SLI, it froze just seconds into the game. I thought it was a bad video card, but I began to wonder if it was the SLI itself messing up, or if there were memory issues conflicting with the SLI. So I updated my motherboard with its correct, corresponding specs. One of the fixes in the release notes included a GTX 295/ram issue, which was probably what I was experiencing. Once I updated, I never experienced random program freezes and in-game freezing w/ SLI ever again. (I've gamed a total of about 5 hours now with no problems at all.)

THANK. GOD.
