For those who can't(or won't) read, a prominent Global Warming research center was hacked into and many files and emails exposed showing how they have falsified evidence, suppressed evidence, threatened Global Warming critics with physical harm, encouraged boycotts of scientific journals because they employed a critic, etc. Someone likened the atmosphere to a cult.

BTW I do think Al Gore is a bit of a fraud. He has a lot of ideas about how to change climate and meanwhile he flies around in a private jet and lines his home's driveway with natural gas lanterns that burn all night. So...

Here is the opposite type of educator. This guy is awesome. Dr. David Keith was a professor I was very lucky to have in the University of Calgary. This video lecture of him at TED is awesome, but imagine listening to lectures like this for 70 minutes twice a week. It was absolutely amazing and by far the best educational experience I ever had.

I should make it clear that, although he has some obvious personal opinions, he does an amazing job of remaining neutral during his lectures and sticks only to facts backed by data and explanation of what they mean. We really had to drill him to ask for his opinion on things when we were interested. He doesn't want to indoctrinate us, he wants us to be able to understand the science and politics. This is WAYYY better than what Al Gore does (ie. ride a fork lift for dramatic effect).

I drive a car I can afford. That's all you need to know. As for my views on global warming, I keep a healthy skepticism on pretty much anything that makes a scientific claim.

There are two prevailing effects from burning fossil fuels.

- The gaseous emissions, most notably carbon dioxide, increase the amount of gases in the atmosphere, which in turn makes the atmosphere's Greenhouse Effect more potent. This causes Earth's surface to warm, especially at the north and south poles, which has been called Global Warming. Gaseous emissions are produced from any and every combustion event.

- The particle emissions from dirtier energy sources rise up into the cloud layer and settle there. The particles provide a platform on which very dense clouds form. Understand that clouds ONLY form on airborne particles, and since we are doubling up the amount of air particulate, the clouds thrive. The result is that there are more clouds today than 100 years ago, and they are measurably more dense. This fact is obvious and clearly measurable, as the clouds block a lot of light and we get a time average of 10-15% less light energy on the Earth's surface than we did about 50 years ago. The effect of this is to reduce not only the surface temperature but it also reduces the amount of light available to plant life for photosynthesis as well as for solar panels. This effect is called Global Cooling.

For whatever reason, Global Cooling gets mentioned much less often. While this is probably in part because it is less understood (and indeed at the time of writing that article they did not know of the cause) it's probably just because Global Cooling doesn't sound as scary. However, consider now that the Global Warming and Global Cooling effects are both occurring together, right now. It has been argued that the Global Cooling phenomenon is serving to offset Global Warming effects so that Global Warming doesn't seem as bad as it is really is.

The problem here is how the atmosphere will respond in the years immediately after suspending combustion of coal, diesel and other particulate-rich fuels. It is believed that if we stop burning these fuels, and perhaps replace these fuels with natural gas, there will be a very fast, significant and obvious increase in the global atmospheric temperature as cloud occurances return to natural rates. This is of major concern because we could create a situation where it would be impossible to safely stop burning dirty fuels without knowing we're doing it, and at this point we will have doomed the Earth as the Global Warming effect continues to accumulate.

So, I just wanted to clear up that this article doesn't exactly contradict prevailing climate theory.

We wouldn't have doomed the Earth, we would have merely doomed ourselves (as the Doomsday Theory predicts; it basically says that any technologically advanced civilisation will eventually destroy itself with its own creations, somehow or other. It's also used as an answer as to why we haven't found any alien civilisations: all the nearby ones have blown themselves up). The Earth doesn't particularly care about us, it's been going through the same cycle of global warming and subsequent cooling for countless millenia. We're merely accelerating the process.

Returning to topic: it was nice outside and I did not feel like I was going to be vaporized when I was laughing at this senior in high school having his hair combed by his mom and taking pictures in public with his parents.

Thus, I haven't experienced the effects of Global Warming yet and I find it interesting to note that Al Gore uses three times the average electricity of a normal consumer per month.
